Information and RPL
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process used by CrossRoads Learning Centre to assist you to identify, document, assess and recognize skills and knowledge that you already have. Essentially, we look at any prior learning that you already have and see if we can match up courses that are currently being offered so that you may be able to attain partial or full credit for those courses.
How Can RPL help YOU?
The RPL process can assist you in reducing the amount of time it takes for you to attain enough credits to receive your Mature Student Diploma.
What Forms of Prior Learning Are Valid?
Prior learning can be acquired in a variety of ways: on the job, volunteer work, work experience, training courses, independent study, family and life experience, other formal education that you may already have.
What is the RPL Process?
When you are first identified as a potential RPL candidate, our qualified instructors will meet with you to discuss your needs and your future career/educational goals. Keep in mind that being identified as a potential candidate does not guarantee successful attainment of a credit. You must prove your learning matches up with the learning outcomes described for each course you wish to challenge.
The next step would be to set up an assessment process in which your prior learning is demonstrated for a particular course. This assessment process may take a variety of forms - tests, demonstrations, assignments, portfolios, etc.. CrossRoads Learning Centre may then grant credit for learning that is equivalent to specific learning outcomes for a particular course.
Who Should Apply for RPL?
The RPL process is available to our students who have significant work experience, life experience, or learning experience which may be equivalent to our courses. The learning that you have should be current and must be relevant to the courses that we offer. Keep in mind that this is not a speedy process - it takes time and is not for everyone.
