Pre-Calculus 30S Math
What is this course about?
This course is designed for students who intend to study calculus and related mathematics as part of post-secondary education. It builds on the topics studied in Grade 10 Pre-Calculus and provides background knowledge and skills for Grade 12 Pre-Calculus. The course comprises a high-level study of theoretical mathematics with an emphasis on problem solving and mental mathematics. Topics include algebra, quadratic functions, quadratic equations, reciprocal functions, rationals, radicals, absolute value, and trigonometry. |

Physics 30S
What is this course about?
Physics is the study of mechanics of the universe. From the infinite expanses of space to the microscopic systems of the atoms, this course takes you through the known to the unknown. The topics covered are: kinematics, vectors, dynamics, gravity, electric fields, magnetic fields, and electromagnetism, waves and sound. |

Grade 12 (40S) Course Descriptions
Accounting Systems 40S (not offered this year)
What is this course about?
Grade 12 Accounting builds and expands upon the accounting principles and concepts introduced in Grade 11 Accounting Principles and focuses on merchandise accounting. The creation and maintenance of computer accounting records are an integral component of the curriculum. Problem-solving skills using computers, business-oriented skills, business ethics, communication, and technology are incorporated into the course. This course will be introduced immediately following the completion of the Grade 11 Accounting course. Initially, the instruction of the course will follow the traditional teacher led format. However, as students become more comfortable with computerized accounting, more of a self-paced model of learning will be encouraged. Accounting 30S is a required prerequisite for Accounting 40S. |
Who Should Take This Course?
This course would appeal to those learners who are interested in enhancing the accounting theory learned in Accounting 30S, as Accounting 40S builds on those skills by addressing procedures necessary for a merchandising firm. In addition, students will become adept at maintaining accounting records through the computer program Simply Accounting. This course would benefit anyone interested in pursuing an accounting designation such as Certified General Accountant or Certified Management Accountant. It would provide valuable preparatory knowledge for anyone interested in taking Business Administration or Computerized Accounting at Red River College or one of the private career colleges. Accounting Systems 40S is one of the academic subjects approved for regular admission at the University of Winnipeg. |
Applied Business Technologies/Computer Education 40S
What is this course about?
Applied Business Technologies focuses on integrating advanced software features commonly used in business. This course is designed for students interested in learning about the customization of presentation software to create, edit, and manage business documents, using advanced features of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Topics include multimedia elements such as creating and manipulating images, graphics, videos, and animations. |
Who Should Take This Course?
We believe that every student who comes to our school should take this course as it prepares students to create a variety of documents (research papers, resumes, presentations) that will be used throughout a variety of courses. Students who are considering a career in the business world or in office administration would also benefit from enrolling in this course. |
Applied Math 40S
What is this course about?
This course promotes critical thinking and problem solving and models real-world situations using mathematics. Technology plays a large part of this course. It is mandatory that students have access to a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator. Students may purchase their own, rent one from CrossRoads Learning Centre, or download a web-based version onto their personal device. Topics included in the course are Personal Finance, Measurement, Logic, Probability, Polynomial Functions, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Sinusoidal Functions, and Permutations/Combinations. Applied Math 30S is recommended as a prerequisite; however, students may be accepted into the course if they demonstrate strong mathematical ability through the completion of our Math Assessment. |
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is intended for students considering post-secondary studies, but who do not require a study of theoretical calculus. Successful completion of Applied Math 40S allows admission to most programs at Red River College, Assiniboine Community College, and Keewatin Community College. In addition, admission is granted to most programs at the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, and Brandon University. Students are encouraged to check with their intended faculty to ensure that Applied Math 40S will satisfy pre-requisite criteria. Students who do not have the discipline or commitment to devote several hours of homework per week should not attempt this course. |
Biology 40S
What is this course about?
Grade 12 Biology is designed to assist students in achieving a greater understanding of human genetics, bioenergetics, the animal kingdom, and the plant kingdom. Broad themes to be covered include evolution, and the transmission, expression, and technological application of gnees. (No prerequisites are required for this course) |
Who Should Take This Course?
This course would be suitable for students planning on entering further studies in nursing or the sciences at the post-secondary level. Although no prerequisite is required for this course, students are expected to commit several hours of at-home study each week in order to be successful in this course. Biology 40S is one of the academic subjects approved for regular admission at either the University of Manitoba or the University of Winnipeg. |
Career Development 40S
What is this course about?
Recognizing that work is directly tied to a person’s economic well-being and a person’s self-esteem, Career Development teaches the skills, habits, and attitudes necessary to become successful employees. Students will identify their individual interests, aptitudes, and values in order to gain insight into choosing a suitable career path. Built into the curriculum are developing effective resumes, cover letter writing, job search techniques, and developing interview and public-speaking skills. Students who participate in this course will also be given the opportunity to do a work experience practicum. |
Who Should Take This Course?
Any student who wishes to earn a Mature Student High School Diploma and does not have a well-defined career path is encouraged to enroll in this course. In addition, anyone interested in gaining new insights into current labour market trends and influences, becoming informed about educational opportunities, and/or those who would like to update their resume and build on their communication skills would benefit from this course. |
Chemistry 40S
What is this course about?
The purpose of Chemistry 40S is to serve as an extension or continuation of the development of principles of chemistry learned in the Grade 11 course. The fundamental principles which will be introduced will include electronic structure, bonding, the periodic table, chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibria, oxidation and reduction reactions. A review of essential Chemistry 30S theory will be incorporated into the course. (No prerequisites are required for this course) |
Who Should Take This Course?
This course would be suitable for students planning on entering further studies in nursing or the sciences at the post-secondary level. Although preferable and beneficial to have Chemistry 30S, no prerequisite is required for this course other than the commitment to devote several hours in at-home study per week. The teacher will incorporate substantial Grade 11 review into the course in order to permit successful completion of the Grade 12 course. Chemistry 40S is one of the academic subjects approved for regular admission at either the University of Manitoba or the University of Winnipeg. |
English Language Arts 40S - Comprehensive
What is this course about?
The emphasis of this course is 50% pragmatic/practical and 50% aesthetic/reflective. As listeners, readers, viewers, students will recall, paraphrase, and analyse pragmatic texts, and respond to and interpret aesthetic literature. The course focuses equally on fiction (novels, short stories, plays, films, and poems) and on non-fiction literature (newspaper and magazine articles, documentaries, and editorials). Students write extensively, including paragraphs, essays and other writing forms. This course helps students to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms. Students need to be aware that all assignments that are submitted for teacher assessment must be computer generated. Our schools have computer labs equipped with PCs that have Microsoft Office applications installed on them. |
Who Should Take This Course?
The course workload for this English credit is split between pragmatic (practical) applications, and aesthetic (artistic) applications. Students who enjoy exploring texts in depth and expressing themselves creatively would benefit from this program. Successful completion of Language Arts 40S Comprehensive Focus permits admission to all programs at Red River College, the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, Assiniboine Community College, and Keewatin Community College. Students should be prepared to work several hours per week on homework assignments outside of classroom time. |
English Language Arts 40S - Transactional Focus
What is this course about?
This course concentrates 75% on the pragmatic (practical use) of oral and written language. This is language that informs, directs, persuades, analyzes, argues and explains. Transactional language is the "language to get things done". The other 25% of the course concentrates on language that is used primarily to capture and represent experience, feelings or vision and to create an imagined reality. Reading activities are primarily nonfiction selections and focus, in particular, on real-life writing (biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, etc.). This course helps students to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms. Language Arts Transactional requires more research assignments than in Language Arts Comprehensive. The Transactional Focus is intended for those students whose post-secondary studies will include journalism, engineering, science, law, medicine, business administration, computer science, agriculture, nursing, etc. Students need to be aware that all assignments that are submitted for teacher assessment must be computer generated. Our schools have computer labs equipped with PCs that have Microsoft Office applications installed on them. |
Who Should Take This Course?
The course workload for this English credit mainly focuses on the pragmatic (practical) applications; however, there is some time spent on the aesthetic (creative). Students who plan on taking studies in Business Administration, Trades, Mathematics, Science, etc. would benefit from this program as it is more concrete in nature. Successful completion of Language Arts 40S Transactional Focus permits admission to all programs at Red River College, the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, Brandon University, Assiniboine Community College, and Keewatin Community College. Students should be prepared to work several hours per week on homework assignments outside of classroom time. |
Essential Math 40S
What is this course about?
In order to meet the challenges of society, high school graduates must be mathematically literate. This course emphasizes consumer applications, problem solving, and decision making. Topics include: Home Finance, Vehicle Finance, Business Finance, Statistics, Measurement, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Probability. Essential Math 30S is recommended as a prerequisite; however, students may be accepted into the course depending upon their scores on our Math Assessment. |
Who Should Take This Course?
This course is intended for students where post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science-related fields. |
Physics 40S
What is this course about?
This course continues the study of basic concepts that were studied in the Grade 11 Physics course and expands upon them. A knowledge of motion, vectors and energy is required in order to understand the topics covered in Grade 12 Physics. More specifically, the course discusses Electric Forces and Magnetic Fields, Electric Circuits, Projectiles and Circular Motion, Work and Energy, Exploration of Space, and Electromagnetic Induction. Who Should Take This Course?
This course is designed for students who are interested in engineering, x-ray technology, or medical careers such as doctors, dentists, and pharmacists. Problem-solving and logical thinking are emphasized. Therefore, students must have a solid mathematical background. |
Pre-Calculus 40S
What is this course about?
Pre-Calculus 30S or evidence of previous success with higher level algebraic studies is a prerequisite to Pre-calculus 40S. Students must achieve a minimum mark of 80% on the CrossRoads Learning Centre Math Assessment in order to be accepted into the course. Grade 12 Pre-Calculus is a very demanding and fast-paced course designed for students who intend to study calculus and related mathematics as part of their post-secondary education. This course is designed primarily as a high-level study of theoretical mathematics with an emphasis on problem solving and mental mathematics. Topics of study include circular functions, transformations, trigonometric identities, exponents and logarithms, permutations and combinations, conics, probability, and geometric sequence. |
Who Should Take This Course?
Pre-calculus 40S is designed for students with good mathematical ability who will be continuing studies at the post-secondary level in fields related to science, mathematics, computer science, engineering, architecture, or the technologies. The curriculum is intended as preparation for calculus at the university or college levels. Successful completion of Pre-calculus 40S allows admission to all programs at Red River College, Assiniboine Community College, and Keewatin Community College. In addition, admission is granted to University 1 with either single or double English 40S credits, admission to all mathematics/science courses at the University of Winnipeg with one English 40S credit, and admission to Brandon University with one English 40S credit. Students who do not have the discipline or commitment to devote several hours of homework per week should not attempt this course. |

Credit for Employment 45G (1/2 Credit)
What is this course about?
Credit for Employment will allow students to earn high school credit by recognizing the skills development and experience gained through paid employment. In order to earn a Credit for Employment, students must also successfully complete Career Development 45S. |
Who should take this course?
Students who need additional credits and are currently working could take advantage of this course offering. |
Special Language Credit
What is this course about?
Students who can demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English or French may be granted high school credits by presenting proven credentials from a recognized educational institution or by participating in Special Language examinations that are offered twice a year. See Centre staff for more details about this option. Students can accumulate a maximum of two credits towards their Mature Student High School Diploma. |
Who should take this course?
Students who are fluent in a second language and who need additional credits for the Mature Student Diploma would benefit from this opportunity. * These credits are only offered two times per year. |
Community Service 41G
What is this course about?
Students can make a contribution to society by volunteering for worthwhile causes or organizations. Students may receive 1 high school credit by completing 110 hours of volunteer work in a recognized social service agency. Approval of the volunteer work at a specific agency must be granted by the Director of the Centre prior to starting the volunteer placement. |
Who should take this course?
Students who are taking the Mature Student Diploma and who need additional credits might benefit from this opportunity. In addition, students with little to no work experience who want to boost their resume, could also take advantage of this opportunity. |
Gym Credit (40F)
What is this course about?
This course is designed to help students take greater ownership of their own physical fitness, to encourage them to seek out activities that interest them, and to engage in active lifestyles into their future. Students will be exposed to a variety of topics such as nutrition, social/emotional health, substance abuse, and fitness management. These topics will make up about one-third of the course content. Students will be required to participate in 85 hours of physical fitness activities, whereby a physical activity log must be completed and verified through a sign-off procedure with a reliable source at the fitness facility. Students will be graded for completion of the course with a Complete of Incomplete designation. |
Who should take this course?
Students who are taking the Mature Student Diploma and are in need of additional credits may take advantage of this opportunity. Gym membership payments are the responsibility of the student. |
