English Language Arts 30S - Transactional Focus

 

This course concentrates 75% on the pragmatic (practical use) of oral and written language. This is language that informs, directs, persuades, analyzes, argues and explains. Transactional language is the "language to get things done". The other 25% of the course concentrates on language that is used primarily to capture and represent experience, feelings or vision and to create an imagined reality.

 

Reading activities are primarily nonfiction selections and focus in particular on real-life writing (biographies, autobiographies, profiles, etc.). This course helps students to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms.

 

The Transactional Focus is intended for those students whose post-secondary studies will include journalism, engineering, science, law, medicine, business administration, computer science, agriculture, nursing, etc.

 

Who Should Take This Course?

This course prepares students for the Grade 12 Language Arts Transactional course. This course is a requirement for anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • The student received less than 60% in Grade 10 Language Arts

OR

  • The student does not have a Grade 10 Language Arts credit

AND

  • Completion of CrossRoads Learning Centre's language arts assessment determines that the student is not equipped to proceed directly into our Grade 12 Language Arts course.

 

Students should be prepared to work several hours per week outside of classroom time.

 

English Language Arts 30S - Comprehensive Focus (not offered this year)

 

This course concentrates 50% on language that is used to capture and represent experience, feelings or vision and to create an imagined reality, and the other 50% concentrates on language that is used to convey viewpoints or information or to prompt action from an audience.

 

This course focuses equally on fiction (novels, short stories, plays, films) and on non-fiction (newspapers and magazine articles, documentaries, editorials). Students write extensively, including paragraphs, essays and other writing forms. This course helps students to develop an awareness of the different forms of language and the ability to apply their language skills to a variety of forms.

 

Who Should Take This Course?

This course prepares students for the Grade 12 Language Arts Comprehensive course. This course is a requirement for anyone who meets the following criteria:

  • The student received less than 60% in Grade 10 Language Arts

OR

  • The student does not have a Grade 10 Language Arts credit

AND

  • Completion of CrossRoads Learning Centre's language arts assessment determines that the student is not equipped to proceed directly into our Grade 12 Language Arts course.

 

Students should be prepared to work several hours per week outside of classroom time.

 

Consumer Math 30S (not offered this year)

 

In order to meet the challenges of society, high school graduates must be mathematically literate. They must understand how mathematical concepts permeate daily life, business, industry, and government. This course meets these challenges by emphasizing consumer applications, problem solving, and decision making. Topics include the cost of operating a vehicle, probability, income tax, measurement, income, buying on credit, statistics, and relations/formulas.

 

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is a requirement for anyone who does not display the adequate skills necessary to proceed in our Grade 12 Consumer Math program. This will be determined upon completion of CorssRoads Learning Centre's math assessment.

 

Consumer Math 30S is encouraged to be taken by all students who are lacking their Grade 11 math credit as it provides the foundation numeracy skills required in order to be successful at the Grade 12 level. It is also an excellent course as a refresher for those who have not been actively engaged in the school environment for several years.

 

Accounting 30S (not offered this year)

 

Accounting is the language of business with standard principles and concepts governing its practice. The course introduces the student to manual accounting procedures in the service industry, providing an understanding of recognized accounting concepts, principles, and processes. These manual accounting procedures are transferred to a computerized accounting environment.

 

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is intended for anyone interested in starting a business or working as a bookkeeping clerk in the service sector, i.e. hairdressing, tanning studio, travel agency, etc. It is also a prerequisite course for those planning to take Accounting Systems 40S.
